The best overall study of the Peloponnesian War is Donald Kagan's book. He dedicated his career to the deep study of this conflict and his book is a modern masterpiece. Reading Kagan is great preparation for taking on Thucydides. I would next recommend "The Landmark Edition of Thucydides". It is by far the best edition to read/5(32).
